“Dig deep enough in every heart and you’ll find it: a longing for meaning, a quest for purpose. As surely as a child breathes, he will someday wonder, What is the purpose of my life?” -Max Lucado
“I want to do something with my life—something important.”
“I want to have a purpose.”
How often do we hear these phrases uttered? As human beings, we are wired to seek something greater than ourselves. We yearn for vision: a drive and a dream with which to structure our days. Creating goals, forming new habits, laying out a plan for our year or—even better—a five-year plan, is high on the priority list of many as they attempt to fulfill their purpose.
Lighthouse strives to empower each participant and staff to actualize their purpose by daring to dream big and by pushing forward when challenges arise.
But what about today?
Maybe there is a concrete, specific end—earning money, gaining a job independently, creating a piece of art, following a recipe and cooking a meal, moving into a different job role—or maybe we find new gifts and revived passions along the way, in the day-to-day activities.
It is the consistency of small steps that leads us to a place of growth. It’s the daily choice to engage in something of value. To fulfill our job duties or learn about a new topic or practice new skills. By offering such a wide range of services, Lighthouse staff eagerly meet each individual where they are at and provide opportunities to discover and lean into one’s purpose.
We see purpose demonstrated in a young woman’s acquisition of a competitive job. We see purpose in another person’s internal growth as they become more comfortable sharing with a group of their peers, even leading a discussion. We see purpose in daily enrichment activities that stimulate not only a person’s brain, but their heart as well. We see evidence of this purpose in the daily soul-level smiles, beams of pride, and triumphant words sharing one’s accomplishments.
Purpose looks different for each one of us. What remains the same is the commitment of Lighthouse to encourage every individual and celebrate alongside them when they succeed.
